Best Picture:
Avatar, The Blind Side, District 9, An Education, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, Precious, A Serious Man, Up, Up in the Air
My thoughts: Obviously, the best picture nominees expanded to ten this year, which is the only reason that The Blind Side ended up getting nominated. The nominees were mostly predictable, I was expecting from the very begining, that The Hurt Locker is going to get nominated, even though the film itself, is just ok. District 9 definitely wasn't worthy of a nod in my opinion, there are tons of movies that are probably more qualified, Invictus for example, or 500 Days of Summer. Inglourious Basterds is a nomination well deserved, along with Avatar. A Serious Man was also kind of surprising, I thought that at times, the film was genious, the Coen Brothers always manage to make good stuff. As for An Education, I loved the film, don't get me wrong, but best picture? And then we have Precious and Up in the Air, which were two films that would obviously get in. And for my conclusion, Up, the first computer animated film of all time to be nominated for best picture, it makes me happy to say that.
Missing: Invictus, Funny People, I Love you, Man, A Single Man, 500 Days of Summer, Public Enemies, Sherlock Holmes
Best Director:
Kathryn Bigelow: The Hurt Locker, Jason Reitman: Up in the Air, Lee Daniels: Precious, Quentin Tarentino: Inglourious Basterds, James Cameron: Avatar.
My thoughts: Predictable, predictable, predictable, and I don't argue with the decision that the Academy made. I kind of thought that we might see Clint Eastwood's name on here too though.
Best Actor:
Jeff Bridges: Crazy Heart, Jeremy Renner: The Hurt Locker, Morgan Freeman: Invictus, Colin Firth: A Single Man, George Clooney: Up in the Air
My thoughts: I knew these would be the nominees for months. And we all know that it's gonna go to Bridges, eh, no biggy. Renner was also terrific in Hurt Locker, no doubt. Clooney Up in the Air, same deal. But the top two for me are actually Firth and Freeman, in A Single Man, and Invictus. Those two were the most riveting for me.
Missing: Johnny Depp: Public Enemies, Michael Stuhlbarg: A Serious Man, Robert Downey Jr.: Sherlock Holmes, Joseph Gordon-Levitt: 500 Days of Summer, Adam Sandler: Funny People
Best Actress:
Sandra Bullock: The Blind Side, Meryl Streep: Julie and Julia, Carey Mulligan: An Education, Ellen Burstyn: The Last Station, Gabourey Sidibe: Precious
My thoughts: It pains me to say that Bullock is going to walk home with this Oscar, what a shame. If you compare the quality of her performance to Streep or Mulligan. My heart is actually going for Mulligan here, she's easily the most deserving. If Streep does end up winning though, I will be thoroughly satisfied. She was brilliant in Julie and Julia.
Christoph Waltz: Inglourious Basterds, Stanley Tucci: The Lovely Bones, Matt Damon: Invictus, Christopher Plummer: The Last Station, Woody Harrelson: The Messenger
My thoughts: We know the winner, we know it's going to be Christoph Waltz, the only other supporting performance (male) this year that had contention with his performance was Christian McKay in Me and Orson Welles, who foolishly wasn't nominated. That was really disappointing, but atleast the winner is nominated.
Missing: Christian McKay: Me and Orson Welles, Alfred Molina: An Education, Stanley Tucci: Julie and Julia, Anthony Mackie: The Hurt Locker, Bob Peterson: Up, Alec Baldwin: It's Complicated
Supporting Actress:
Monique: Precious, Anna Kendrik: Up in the Air, Vera Farmiga: Up in the Air, Maggie Gylanhaal: Crazy Heart, Penelope Cruz: Nine
My thoughts: Only three of the nominees were worthy in my opinion, the two from Up in the Air, and ofcourse, Monique in Precious. The two others could be replaced easily by better performances. Bleh. Frontrunners: Monique and Kendrik
Missing: Samantha Morton: The Messenger, Marion Cotillard: Public Enemies, Julianne Moore: A Single Man, Melanie Laurent: Inglourious Basterds, Natalie Portman: Brothers
Best Editing: District 9, Inglourious Basterds, Precious, The Hurt Locker, Avatar
My thoughts: The editing in District 9 made it more confusing than it had to be. Precious isn't really worthy of a nod. Inglourious Basterds is a difficult film to edit so it might end up winning. Avatar's editing was excellent, made the story flow along better. The Hurt Locker had ok editing.
